Welsh Water's own boss tells Britain not to copy its not-for-profit model

Three German-language outlets ran one identical rewrite of a Financial Times interview. In it, Welsh Water chief Roch Cheroux says the company's shareholder-free model has not fixed sewage or infrastructure, and that regulation matters more than ownership. Nobody in the set is angry at Welsh Water. The only criticism comes from its own CEO. Kronen Zeitung, 29 Sep

Welsh Water's CEO Roch Cheroux says the company's own performance falls short. On whether other suppliers should adopt its model, he says: "No, no, no, I wouldn't do it." He adds: "The condition of the assets is not where it should be, and the level of performance is not where it should be."

This is the most usable line in the coverage for anyone arguing against nationalisation or mutualisation. It comes from the head of the utility usually held up as the alternative model, and it reached German and Austrian mass-market readers word for word. It is wire copy, so it tells you what those readers saw, not what Bild, Merkur or Krone think. Kronen Zeitung, 29 Sep

The same piece places Welsh Water inside a wider UK fight. It says Prime Minister Andy Burnham called the Thatcher-era privatised system "very bad". It also cites YouGov polling that more than 80% of the public want water nationalised.

German-speaking readers are getting the UK water debate framed as public anger against a failed privatisation, with Welsh Water as a cautionary footnote. Neither Wales nor Welsh Water is the target. Kronen Zeitung, 29 Sep
